The nation's biggest trash hauler is suing the city of Oakland over a $1 billion contract.

Waste Management Solutions was one of two companies that bid on the contract. The city said it chose a smaller, Oakland-based company, because it promised lower rates.

Waste Management claims Oakland voted for a company with "personal and political connections" to council members. The lawsuit asks the court to award the contract to Waste Management.

Calls for comment placed to the city attorney's office were not returned.
