Blessing Box inspires people in one community and beyond

ARDMORE, OK -- "Take what you need, bring what you can. Above all be blessed!" Those words posted above a simple cardboard box filled with food are making a big impact in one community and inspiring change around the country.

The box is called the Blessing Box and it stands outside of CrystalRock Cathedral in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Church Coordinator Vicki Holokahi Groomer was inspired to create the Blessing Box after seeing a similar project at a church in Arkansas. Groomer said it was a simple way to give a helping hand to people who are going through a hard time.

"My first thought about it was to help the people make it a few days (until) payday and thinking about hungry kids," said Holokahi Groomer. "I've talked to so many people who said they were in that situation and have given back when they are able."

Everything in the box is free and all of the items in the box are donated. Anyone in need can simply walk up to the box and take out items.

Holokahi Groomer said the box is blessing people in their community and beyond. She shared this letter with Eyewitness News which she received from another organization:

I love this idea! I am the office administrator of our local Baptist Association. We currently have about 83 Southern Baptist churches in our association, and I an going to promote this idea to them if it is okay with your organization. Even if only half of our churches decided to do this, what an impact it would have in our communities!!

"This gives you an idea of what God is doing," said Holokahi Groomer.

The church asks donors to bring items that will not spoil in the heat.
