MONTEREY, Calif. (KGO) -- Scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium have figured out which animal takes the longest time to hatch its eggs.

The deep sea octopus can guard their eggs for as long as four and a half years. That is twice as long as the average lifespan for other octopi.

Perhaps, even more startling, the octopus goes without food during that time period.
