Scientists discover new coral species off Sonoma Coast

SONOMA COUNTY (KGO) -- Scientists have discovered a new species of deep sea coral off the Sonoma Coast.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research team discovered the 4-inch long red and white coral in a canyon 600 feet underwater.

The coral may provide new information about deep sea ecosystems, that's because most corals traditionally serve as a refuge for marine life.
