The great news is credit card users have some of the strongest protections. Your maximum liability under federal law is just $50 if you report the fraud within 48 hours and $500 if you report it within two months. Most major retailers however will waive that liability. But what do you do if you shop at Target?
Keep track of your credit card charges. Reading the statement at the end of the month is fine. And be sure to answer any voicemails from your financial institutions. They are now on alert and will be calling many of us to see if charges are legit. Also, consider using a credit card for purchases. With a credit card, you don't pay the fraudulent charge. With a debit card, the money is gone and you petition to get it back.
Target
Target's phone number is 866-852-8680, but their call centers have been overwhelmed and there's not much they'll be able to do for you. If you do hear from Target, it doesn't necessarily mean your account has been compromised.
Contact the credit reporting bureaus (<a href="http://www.experian.com/" target=_blank>Experian</a>, <a href="http://www.equifax.com/home/en_us" target=_blank>Equifax</a> and <a href="http://www.transunion.com/" target=_blank>Transunion</a>) and file a fraud report.
Report the crime to local police and the Federal Trade Commission at <a href="http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft" target=_blank>www.consumer.gov/idtheft</a>, or by calling the FTC, at (877) IDTHEFT (438-4338).
Target has also provided <a href="http://www.abullseyeview.com/2013/12/how-to-sign-up-for-redcard-alerts/" target=_blank>instructions</a> for how REDCard holders can set up alerts to let them know every time their card is used. The good news is your social security number is not attached to your credit card, making identity theft beyond fraudulent charges unlikely.
Tell the story as you see it.
