EL CERRITO, Calif. (KGO) -- Students in El Cerrito have raised more than just pocket change to help children in Nepal.
Fifth graders at Fairmont Elementary School turned to family and friends to gather $1,483. One student even turned in 900 pennies.
About 10 percent of the student population at the school is Nepalese and some still have family there, so this fundraiser had special meaning.

"They lost their home, their families and some of them died, so if we give them money at least we could help them," student Sadhana Kalakheti said.
All the funds will go to Nepal through the Save the Children organization.
