Large crowd gathers for women's summit in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- As Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff deals with a police department scandal in her city, she found a welcoming crowd at a large event that featured big names in business and politics at San Francisco's Moscone Center on Tuesday.

Nearly 1,500 people attended the Bay Area Women's Summit with the goal of empowering women and their families.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and Schaaf co-hosted the summit.

They tweeted a Selfie as well as a picture President Barack Obama's senior advisor, Valerie Jarrett.

Among the big name speakers and panelists were U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios, Apple Vice President of Environment Lisa Jackson and Instagram COO Marne Levine.

Schaff welcomed the attendees with a message saying: "This is not just about fighting for women's rights. It's about fighting for what is right and fair and let us remember we are not alone in that fight," she said.

Speakers shined a spotlight on several key issues, including workplace equity, shattering stereotypes.

Childcare and elderly care policies and mentoring.

The hope is leaders and attendees will take the conversations sparked at the summit and push through real change that will benefit women, especially middle class women, working class women and single moms.
