Man gifts kidney to fiancée for Valentine's Day in Canada

SASKATOON, CANADA -- A Canadian man gave his fiance the ultimate early Valentine's gift, a second chance at life.

Not only that, but through the whole process, they discovered just what a perfect match they are.

Christian Willenborg is recovering at home. His fianc is still in hospital, but the couple has never felt closer.

"Really, a whole new shot at life and to get it from my fianc, is just incredible," says Errin Tollefson.

The couple started dating two years ago.

"It was on a third or fourth date, she asked me if there was anything she didn't know about me," says Christian Willenborg. "I said I think it rains when you step on a spider. And she told me, she needed a kidney."

Tollefson was born with one kidney and it started to fail. She required 9 hours of dialysis every night.

Her father was ready to donate a kidney to her, but then he died from cancer.

So secretly, Christian got all the medical tests but the university professor was worried. Would they be compatible?

"I met with one of the doctors who told me that we were basically a perfect match or a near perfect match," Willenborg says. "And later that week, I went out and bought the ring because as a scientist, what more confirmation can I have than actual data, right?"

A near perfect match. It's relatively rare.

The surgery happened last week, and Tollefson says she is really thankful.

"Every day," she says.

The couple is recovering well, and making plans for a wedding and their future.

"What are we going to do for Valentine's Day?" Willenborg asks.

"I have some plans up my sleeve," Tollefson replies.

"It just blows my mind that she thinks of this stuff."
