Watch: Adorable koalas released back into the wild following car crash

QUEENSLAND, Australia -- Two koalas, who have taken the Internet by storm, are now back in the wild.

Lizzy, a female koala, was struck by a car last month. Her joey, Phantom, was still in her pouch. Phantom was unharmed, but Lizzy suffered chest trauma and a collapsed lung.

The pair was brought to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for treatment and rehabilitation. Soon after, images of Phantom clinging to his mother during her surgery went viral.

"Phantom was very affectionate; clinging to his mum for comfort during her procedure, but soon after, Lizzy was the one doing all the cuddling," said Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Rebecca Millers.

RSPCA Qld Wildlife Coordinator Lee Pirini said, "There were grave concerns for Lizzy when she came in but thankfully she was able to be stabilized."

Dr. Millers, who had been treating both Phantom and Lizzy since they were first brought into the hospital, was ecstatic to witness the duo make their way back into the wild this week.

"There's nothing more rewarding than achieving a successful rehabilitation for these two beautiful koalas. They weren't with us for long but in the short time we had them, we all fell completely in love with this adorable pair," said Dr. Millers. "We hope they continue their loving relationship as they settle back into life in the wild."
