What Really Matters: San Jose officer's tragic death
San Jose Officer Michael Johnson was a great cop and his death is a tragic reminder of the daily dangers of police work, which is something many have lost sight of.

In tonight's What Really Matters segment, a tragic reminder this week that the men and women of law enforcement who protect us with their lives, sometimes give their lives.

San Jose Police Officer Michael Johnson was fatally shot Tuesday by a man with a high-powered rifle who threatened to kill himself. But he didn't shoot himself, he allegedly shot the cop who came to help.

Johnson's partner stood his ground and took the man out before he could kill anyone else.

By all accounts, Johnson was a good guy and a great cop. His death is a tragic reminder of the daily dangers of police work, which is something many have lost sight of.

Police under fire recently over controversial shootings and arrests are sparking angry protests in cities across the country.

In reality, the incidents making headlines are rare. According to federal statistics, less than 2-percent of all police interactions with the public end in any kind of violent confrontation.

While we must always scrutinize the actions of police, what really matters is that the vast majority are honest, hard-working and as the loss of Johnson reminds us -- brave.
