SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Hundreds of young people honored the legacy of labor leader Cesar Chavez Thursday in San Jose.

Students from the Alum Rock School District marched with their families to the Mexican Heritage Plaza where they celebrated the life of the co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union.

The students say it's important to honor the man who helped so many.

"This march means a lot, too," said Renaissance Academy student Elijah Wiggins. "The person that actually did something for people and the farms, that boycotted for the people."

This marks the 21st consecutive year the district has held the march.

Monday is Cesar Chavez Day in California. It is a state holiday and also the same day he was born back in 1927.
