The San Francisco 49ers have been in the headlines a lot already this year and it's hard to believe this is just the first game of the regular season.

But fans were ready to go as they lined up for hours to get inside Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara and though the run-up to this game has been full of controversy, it's not necessarily what the fans are focused on.

Air Force jets did a traditional flyover at 7:15 p.m. after the anthem. A small plane carrying a banner in support of Colin Kaepernick was supposed to fly just before the jets, but officials said it will not due to emergency runway issues. The small plane will attempt to fly in Charlotte next week. "Where the banner comes in and why it's so incredibly important is that it demonstrates regular people all around the country also support this message," Courage Campaign spokesperson William Winters said.

"Enough politics, we're ready for the season opener," one 49ers fan said.

Some 49ers fans ABC7 News spoke with are well aware of Kaepernick's protest, but mostly want to focus on what happens on the field after the anthem. "He's got a right to do what he wants to do and we got a right to do what we want to do. Some of us support him, some of us don't," 49ers fan Sammie Lewis said.

"We're here to support the team. We get here early, we stay here a little bit after, we're inside the game until the clock hits 00:00," 49ers fan Katina Hodrick said.

"We've got a new head coach, new system, and so hopefully we can win some games," 49ers fan Martin Sithiphone said.

One couple drove down from Oroville to be first in line at the gate. "I'm tired of hearing about Kaepernick sitting down and all that, I just want to watch the football games and get straight to the season," 49ers fan Jeremy Lindemann said.

Despite being the underdogs, the 49er Faithful are brimming with optimism going into the first game.

The Rams were favored. "Yeah, they're always favored, but we're going to create a big upset today," 49ers fan Charles McCarver Jr. said.

When a group of 49ers fans were asked how many of them think the Niners will win the first game, they started screaming saying: "You know how we do it."

It will be a special lineup on ABC7 tonight! Since the 49ers' season opener against the Rams starts at 7 p.m. on ABC7, the season premiere of "Dancing With the Stars" will start at 5 p.m. "Dancing With the Stars" will also be available to watch on the new ABC app starting at 8 p.m. Click here to download the new app.
