Garrett on how Hardy is fitting in with Cowboys: 'We're all a work in progress'

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett puts a lot into the phrase "right kind of guy" when putting together a roster.

On Wednesday, Garrett was asked whether defensive endGreg Hardy, who is practicing for the first time Wednesday since his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy ended, has become the right kind of guy.

"Probably like everybody, we're all a work in progress, so we're trying to be the right kind of guy each and every day of our lives," Garrett said.

On Tuesday, Hardy would not speak about the incident that led to him being placed on the commissioner's exempt list last season and suspended for the first four games this year.

In light of the domestic violence charge that led to his suspension, Hardy made some curious choices in words when speaking to reporters Wednesday, considering automatic weapons were part of the alleged assault that occurred in May 2014 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"I hope I come out guns blazing," Hardy said of his expectations in his return.

He also invoked Tom Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, when asked whether it mattered that his return would come against Brady and the Patriots.

"Yeah, it matters," Hardy said. "I love seeing Tom Brady. He's cool as crap. Have you seen his wife? I hope she comes to the game. I hope her sister comes to the game, all her friends come to the game. One of my favorite games of the year, guys."

Brady had no reaction Wednesday when asked about Hardy's comments.

"I'm just getting ready to play, man. I've got to focus on my job," Brady said. "He's a great player. ... It takes a lot of different things to handle a guy like that. But he's been a great player since he's been in the league, so we're going to have to prepare for him and be ready for all different types of moves that he's got. But they've got a good D-line anyway. They count on getting pressure from their front four getting to the quarterback, so I don't really care about his personal feelings."

In May, Hardy wrote an insensitive tweet about the Twin Towers in reference to Carolina Panthers receivers Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess that the Cowboys dealt with immediately. Hardy deleted the tweet and apologized.

Garrett has praised Hardy's work ethic since he signed in March.

"He jumped right into the offseason program and demonstrated that he's willing to work each and every day to try to get better, to try to help our team," Garrett said. "I thought he had a very good training camp, worked very hard every day, got better over the course of training camp. He's been away from us for four weeks, but now he's back and we're excited to have him back on the practice field today."
