LONDON (KGO) -- The Invictus Games for wounded servicemen and women from 13 countries are now underway in London.

Members of the Royal Family attended Wednesday night's opening ceremony, led by Prince Harry, who has worked for more than a year to make the games a reality.

The prince's goal is to allow wounded warriors to compete as a kind of relief for the price they paid in Iraq or Afghanistan, where he served as well.

"Over the next four days, we will see some truly remarkable achievements. For some of those taking part, this will be a stepping stone to elite sports. For others, it will mark the end of a chapter in their recovery and I have no doubt lives will be changed over this weekend," he said.

More than 400 athletes are competing in games such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball and rowing.

About a quarter of them are from the United States.
