Raiders QB Derek Carr might need surgery on injured ring finger

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has suffered an injury to his right ring finger that might require surgery, a source tells ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Carr has experienced numbness in the finger, according to a source, a condition that can be nerve-related. The Raiders hope the second-year quarterback's finger will respond well to rehab and allow him to avoid a surgical option. The source did not provide information on a specific event that created the condition, but the team is not overly alarmed.

The injury could prevent Carr from participating in organized team activities, which began Tuesday, but the quarterback is expected to be ready for training camp at some point.

Carr sat out of the Raiders' activities on Tuesday, but Raiders coach Jack Del Rio would only confirm that Carr wouldn't participate. He provided no details.

"Time missed in May is better than time missing in September. You're often more capable of taking whatever time is necessary to make sure you put things behind you," Del Rio told reporters.

With Carr sitting out, Christian Ponder worked with the first team.

Carr started all 16 games in his rookie season and is being counted on to solidify the revolving door at quarterback that has plagued Oakland for the past decade.
