RIO DE JANEIRO -- A World Cup fan watching a match at the FIFA Fan Fest on Copacabana beach has been stabbed in the leg during an attempted robbery, according to a Brazilian newspaper.

O Globo reports on its website that Claudia Costa was attacked on Saturday by a group that has carried out similar assaults during the tournament.

Costa told the newspaper that a group of boys tried to take her purse, and when she screamed for help one of the boys stabbed her with a box-cutter. She was taken to a hospital and received nine stitches before being released.

Police say they have no report of the case -- and that police don't patrol inside the Fan Fest organised by the city government.

Rio's mayor's office didn't immediately reply to an email requesting information.
