SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Panda is about to become extinct at AT&T Park and presumably the Panda hats as well.

As Giants fans have feared, World Series star Pablo Sandoval signed a mega-deal with the Boston Red Sox Monday and is leaving San Francisco.

The world premiere depicting the 2014 World Series run begins Monday night on the same day they bid farewell to a leading man in that story.

When Sandoval rode with his fellow Giants in the World Series Victory Parade last Halloween, we knew it was a curtain call and hopefully not an exit.

On Monday, the man who hit three home runs in one World Series game against Detroit in 2012, who had 26 hits this post season, signed with the Red Sox for five years for at least $90 million.

To professional observers like sports radio talk show host Damon Bruce, it didn't come as a surprise. "Pablo Sandoval is not choosing the Boston Red Sox over the Giants. He's choosing the American League rulebook," Bruce said.

One that will allow a third baseman with a continual weight battle to eventually play offense only, as a designated hitter in the American League.

"He will always be a giant to me," one fan said.

As exits go, the Kung Fu Panda was one for the ages. His last play for the Giants sealed the Giants' third World Series victory in five years.
