San Jose Sharks loss is South Bay Boys and Girls Club boon

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- The president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Wednesday is swallowing his pride, but it's all for a good cause.

This is a great day for the Boys and Girls Club of Silicon Valley and it was all made possible because it was a not so great ending to the Stanley Cup Final.

If you forgot, or choose not to remember, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the beloved San Jose Sharks 4-2 in the Stanley Cup Final. But the Shark's loss is a big win for the kids in East San Jose and all across Santa Clara County.

Board of Supervisors President Dave Cortese is paying off his bet to the Allegheny County executive Rich Fitzgerald. He swallowed his pride, and his team loyalty, Cortese donned a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey.

"The bet was between me and the Pittsburgh officials that whoever won the Stanley Cup Finals, the loser would have to wear the other team's jersey," Cortese said. "Both sides would donate toys and athletic equipment to the Boys and Girls Club. I have to wear the Penguins jersey because we lost."

The Sharks may have lost, but the kids won, both here and in Pittsburgh.

"We had a league out in the West Valley that donated a lot of the equipment," Cortese said. "These kids are excited,but they're also learning something about sportsmanship. I had to explain why I'm doing this. They thought I was a traitor. It's part of the deal. You shake hands if the other teams does the job, they won the Stanley Cup finals. You have to shake hands and live up to our side of the deal."

But hopefully next year we'll get them to wear the Shark's jersey.
