Team USA fans heartbroken after loss to Belgium

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- It was do-or-die for Team USA.

The young and talented Belgian team continued to blast shots on U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard for the entirety of regulation time. On Tuesday he made 16 saves, which is the most of any keeper in the World Cup since 1966.

San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski had a chance to possibly seal the win in the 92nd minute, but put it over the goal.

Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne ended up scoring for Belgium in extra time, finally getting a shot past Howard.

Julian Green, at 19 the youngest player on the U.S. roster, pulled one back for the Americans in the 107th minute. But Team USA couldn't muster another to send the match to a penalty shootout. And with that, the U.S. was knocked out of the World Cup.

Fans watching the game at San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza were caught up in the rollercoaster ride of action on Tuesday.

When asked if she bet on the game, one fan said, "No, I'm not feeling that confident at this point."

Thousands of diehard soccer fans trained their eyes on the gigantic screen in San Francisco's Civic Center.

The United States was down 2-0 in overtime, then a goal, then hope. But for American soccer fans, it wasn't to be.

The end of the ride came at the exact same point as four years ago: with an overtime loss in the World Cup's round of 16.
