We already know that this World Cup is full of really violent fouls. But the idea of "danger porn" is new to us: it's the strange satisfaction we get from watching that close-up, slow-motion shot of someone's body part getting destroyed on the field, and their subsequent silent scream of agony.

Shudder. Yet the networks replay it over and over and we keep watching.

Some argue that violent movies and video games have inured us to the effect of seeing gruesome or violent sights. Others argue that some people just have a penchant for danger. Still others say that "boys will be boys". But in movies and video games, the pain is not real. Villains get stabbed or fall off cliffs, and then they walk off the set to laugh and eat donuts. In the World Cup, not so much - Neymar left the field in traction, terrified out of his mind because he couldn't feel his legs. They're really colliding; they're really getting hurt. It's not a movie.
