PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) -- Officials are investigating after a bicyclist was fatally struck by a car just outside of Palo Alto Tuesday morning.

Officials said the crash was reported at 6:53 a.m. when a black Volkswagen Golf hit a bicyclist near the intersection of Page Mill Road and Christopher Lane. Officials said this is a popular route with cyclists.

The Santa Clara County coroner's office was called to the area at 7:26 a.m.

The victim has not been identified, but officials said it appears he's a man in his early 30s.

The driver of the car stayed at the scene.

CHP officials are trying to determine what happened and issued a statement for drivers and cyclists saying: "Everybody has to understand just like the motorcycles we have to share the road with the bicyclists, but also the bicyclists have to pay attention to the road signs and the vehicle code violations that also adhere to vehicles, they're not exempt," CHP Ofc. Moises Escoto said.

A CHP officer give the driver a breathalyzer test. Then, the driver was allowed to leave and investigators said alcohol was not a factor in this case.
