Landslide closes Canyon Road in Moraga indefinitely

MORAGA, Calif. (KGO) -- Canyon Road is closed indefinitely because a landslide is pushing up against an old, rundown bridge that officials are worried could collapse.

Drivers say it is a huge inconvenience. "It is a disaster, true pain in the butt for people living in this area," one driver told ABC7 News.

"Definitely going to be days, could be months, could be permanent until the land is stabilized. We can't even think about replacing the bridge which is in the works," said Moraga town manager Robert Priebe.

Commuters use the cut through to get from Moraga to Oakland. Those commuters say they will now add to the congestion of cars trying to get to the freeway.

"Everyone that uses this path going to impact everyone else through Lafayette and Orinda so this is a nightmare," said Alex Cummins, a Moraga resident.

There are about 100 homes in Canyon. Those residents are now cut off from town and there's a school in Canyon with about 70 students.

"this is a big deal a lot of people go to the school this way so it's really awful," said Pat Young, the grandmother of a Canyon student.
