Super Bowl City triggers tighter security for ferry riders

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Thanks to the Super Bowl, the commute has looked a little different for Golden Gate Ferry passengers this week.

"I don't think anyone knew the Coast Guard was on board, or that they were going to be following us," said Susan Nanbary, ferry passenger.

The Coast Guard is just part of a multi-agency security force patrolling the Bay Area for Super Bowl 50.

"This is one of the largest events the Coast Guard has worked," said Chris Hartman, Coast Guard.

Coast Guard boats are escorting some ferries. Passengers have been slowed down by security checks through metal detectors.

"There was just a random bag check boarding the ferry," said Zachary Baker, ferry passenger.

At the San Francisco Ferry Building, K9s do a sweep of the terminal.

"One of the things they do is sweeps of terminals passengers and vessels to make sure no one's brought anything they're not supposed to onto the ferry," said Chris Hartman, Coast Guard.

Just across the street Justin Herman Plaza has been transformed into Super Bowl City. You don't need a ticket to get in but you do need to go through tight security. Police in uniform in plainclothes are on patrol. They're screening delivery trucks - in an effort to keep the family friendly events safe.

So far, the only minor issue was over the weekend when three people were detained, then released for public intoxication.
