San Jose airport ranks in top 10 US airports for low fares

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Mineta San Jose International Airport has been ranked eight for affordable airfares among 101 U.S. airports by Cheapflights.com, a popular flight comparison search engine and website, in its Fifth Annual Airport Affordability Index.

The ranking is established by averaging plane ticket prices found by site users in June 2014 to a list of common domestic and international destinations, and gives travelers extra insight into the cheapest departure and arrival points.

This is the first time SJC made the top 10.

"We are pleased SJC airlines are being responsive to our community's requests for affordable fares and they are being recognized by Cheapflights.com for their efforts," said Director of Aviation Kim Becker Aguirre. "Lower airfares is a reason for travelers to choose between airports and is likely a contributing factor for Silicon Valley's airport marking 22 consecutive months of passenger growth in October."

SJC is the only Bay Area airport to make the top-tier list. Oakland ranks twelfth. SFO came in 81 out of 101.
