EMERYVILLE, Calif. (KGO) -- Rail travelers signed a giant banner at the Emeryville Amtrak Station day, calling on all Californians to track smart.

Among them was Dena Betti of Martinez.

Her 14-year-old daughter Jenna was killed last March, when she tried to retrieve a cell phone she had dropped on the tracks.

"You can't really hear the trains, until they're right upon you and they take a long time to stop. Having even the idea that you can clear it, that you can be safe, isn't always the case."

The banner is making its way across the state and will eventually be presented to Governor Brown.

The event is part of a statewide rail safety campaign that includes three new public service announcements on the dangers of walking on or near train tracks.

Officials say California has more preventable rail-related fatalities and injuries than any other state in the country.
