Boats, yachts pummeled in San Francisco Bay during windstorm

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- As a new round of rain hit the Bay Area Friday night, clean-up from high winds began after they sank a barge and damaged yachts in the bay.

The barge is at the bottom of the Bay about a half-mile east of Yerba Buena Island. The barge was in place for maintenance work on the Transbay Tube. It's owned by Vortex Marine Construction in Antioch.

Divers plugged fuel vents hoping to slow and stop diesel fuel from leaking out of it.

A helicopter will be up first thing Saturday morning to check for sheen. Recovery efforts may take days.

"The barge has a crane and cabling,' said Alicia Trost of BART. "They were replacing metal pieces so the tube does not get corroded."

The Coast Guard says the barge is still tethered to anchors, so they're not worried about it moving, but booms wrapped in diesel sheen as fuel leaks remain a concern.

Gusts up to 60 mph also pounded sail and powerboats in place for a boat show in Richmond.

"Lines were snapping, I mean, it was absolute chaos," said Ian Van Tuyl of Cruising Yachts. "Not to mention it was dangerous."

Cleats were ripped off yachts and docks buckled as 21 of 50 vessels in the Pacific Sail and Powerboat Show sustained damage.

"A handful of boats had to be towed out because they had damage to the hulls, but for the most part, boats and sailors are so resilient," said DeeDee Taft of the boat show.

They spent today cleaning and opened the docks by Friday afternoon.

"Obviously we have millions of dollars worth of inventory here," said Taft. "Which was quite scary myself, the owner of the company Juanue yachts.

The boat show and bay clean-up will go on through the weekend.
