Brentwood animal rescue center flooded after storms

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (KGO) -- A Brentwood animal rescue center took a direct hit in the weekend storms -- so much so that the ranch on Orwood Road is struggling to recover.

It's been a wild and wet few days at the Spirited Sanctuary, founded specifically for abandoned and abused farm animals.

"It was horrible, the winds were 50 plus miles per hour, raining coming out sideways," Spirited Sanctuary's Kathie Pohlman said.

As if the lives of these horses, pigs and chickens haven't been hard enough, their new home, their safe haven, was nearly destroyed by a deluge of water and downed trees over the weekend.

"See the little green house right there with Mr. Wilson in it, had his house been anywhere else he would've been crushed. The tree came down, there was not one spot in this pen that did not have a eucalyptus tree," Spirited Sanctuary's Jamie Rodriguez said.

Two huge eucalyptus trees fell, destroying a number of shelters and fences on the property. What wasn't damaged was flooded.

"The standing water is really bad. It's bad for the horses' hooves. We need to get the standing water pumped out and actually develop a plan to either raise the ground level or build new fencing to locate the horses somewhere else on the property," Rodriguez said.

Now that the water has gone down some, volunteers have moved in to help the nonprofit repair and rebuild.

The sanctuary still has a long road to recovery and is accepting donations of time, services and money to make sure these once-unwanted animals still have a safe place to call home.
