SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (KGO) -- Windy weather took down trees in Marin County and across the Bay Area on Wednesday.
In San Francisco's Castro District, a tree fell at Sanchez and Market streets, blocking the sidewalk. It missed a parked car by inches. No one was hurt.
As of 11 p.m., 57 customers were still without power along Lucas Valley Road and those windy gusts were replaced by cooler temperatures.
Tree cutter Luis Mendez, from Davey Tree Service, was one hour away from spending Christmas Eve with his family when he got the call for a downed tree on Lucas Valley Road near Nicasio.
High wind gusts, up to 36 mph, thrashed Marin County around 2:30 p.m. It toppled a few pine trees across a main artery near Skywalker Ranch. The downed power lines prevented people from getting to Rancho Nicasio's Christmas Eve dinner and concert.
"We had to take a big detour around and up to Novato and around Stafford Lake and then back here," restaurant customer Joe Scannell said.
Around the same time, a tree fell across Highway 1, near Marshall, causing a huge back up there.
Back on Lucas Valley Road, hundreds of people, who had to take a 40 minute detour, worried they would miss the concert.
Rancho Nicasio general manager Jim Warren said, "Some of them begged the Highway Patrol to get by. But the Highway Patrol is staunch."
The band's drummer also had to take a long detour, so the whole night got started about two hours late.
Meanwhile, Mendez had the road cleared in record time. He said, "Well, we're trying to go home. It's Christmas Eve. Our kids are waiting to open the presents."
Mendez made it home to his family and the concert was another hit.
