Closed streets in SF's Mission Bay likely to cause traffic jams

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Traffic is not expected to ease up this weekend in San Francisco. Late Friday evening, the city closed a congested intersection for a construction project that is going to inconvenience commuters for the next eight days.

The construction at 4th and King streets means many Muni trains will be off their regular schedule. Passengers, on the T Third Line will have to ride a bus.

Mom and Muni passenger Gabby Gonzalez said, "It's hard for me with the stroller. I mean, if it's one of those new buses that I can just jump in [then great], but if it has the stairs, it's really hard for me to get on those."

The N-Judah and F Lines will start 45 minutes late, at 5:45 a.m. And the Embarcadero or E Line will not be running on the weekend. Also, many of the regular Muni stops in the Mission Bay area are being temporarily relocated.

"Oh my God, it's bad because I've got to walk with a lot of kids all the way up there," Gonzalez said.

Construction crews will be jack hammering around the clock to tie in existing tracks to the new Central Subway line, which is scheduled to open in 2019.

"It's been getting kind of hectic around here. The noise has been unbearable at times," Mission Bay resident Michael Chickinell said.

All of this will make getting on and off of the I-280 ramp a major inconvenience. Garret Hamabata from Vim and Vigor Salon says it is going to affect his customers driving in from the Peninsula.

"Because we are scheduled every hour, every half-hour, with clients back to back to back we unfortunately cannot take people sometimes when they are late," Hamabata said.

When it is done, the Central Subway will stretch all the way to Chinatown and make the Muni system more efficient for commuters.
