SAN FRANCISCO -- A pedestrian died after being struck by multiple vehicles on southbound Interstate Highway 280 in San Francisco Monday morning, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

At about 6:15 a.m., the CHP received a call of a pedestrian on southbound Highway 280 just north of Alemany Boulevard. Then shortly afterward, more calls came in that the pedestrian had been struck, CHP spokesman Officer Vu Williams said.

Officers responded and found the female pedestrian in the roadway.

She was pronounced dead at the scene and her identity has not yet been released, Williams said.

No vehicles had stopped at the scene and investigators are trying to determine how many may have struck the pedestrian.

The investigation initially prompted the closure of all five southbound lanes of the highway in the area. As of about 8:20 a.m., the two left lanes had reopened but the three right lanes remained closed with no estimate for when they'll reopen, Williams said.
