Proposed tennis courts in Pleasanton sparks protest

PLEASANTON, Calif. (KGO) -- Some passionate people in Pleasanton are speaking out about some proposed tennis courts. The group says the project will take away their slice of green space at the Pleasanton Tennis and Community Center.

The reaction caught city leaders by surprise.

"I don't think anyone thought it would be controversial, but obviously it is," said Brian Dolan, Asst. City Manager.

Protestors greeted construction crews this morning at the Pleasanton Tennis and Community Center. They're outraged that the city is building two more tennis courts here. The city already has 10.

"I don't think they need tennis courts. I love the open space, I love the trees," said Cathy Gibbs, opposes tennis courts.

Some tennis players think two more courts are very necessary because it's very difficult to get a court during prime time.

City leaders say this issue has been before the city council at least three times. The courts were in the city's master plan and several tennis players showed up in favor of the courts. When they saw the protest, they weren't too worried.

"Very few people when you think of population of this area," said Nancy Saunders, tennis player.

But it was enough for city officials to shut down construction for now and call a meeting for concerned citizens with the mayor.

"The city council is going to have to put heads together and see how to respond to this reaction. I'm so proud to be a part of this protest group," said Gibbs.
