SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The U.S. Navy is set to name a ship after gay rights icon Harvey Milk.

Milk came from a Navy family and served as a diving officer during the Korean War.

The U.S. Navy ship Harvey Milk will supply oil to vessels on the high seas.

After his service, Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors becoming the first openly gay elected politician in California. He was killed in office in 1978.
