EL CERRITO, Calif. (KGO) -- Security video released by police shows a violent attempted robbery that happened inside a Subway sandwich shop over the weekend.

Video shows the two men walking into the Subway restaurant in El Cerrito.

One orders a sandwich and when the clerk rings it up, the other man comes alongside the counter and punches the female clerk, knocking her down.

It can be seen that he then jumps over the counter and brutally attacks another female employee.

"At this point in time, the suspect ends up punching her numerous times in the face. She ends up falling to the ground," El Cerrito Police Dept. Det. Sgt. Ian Wong said.

Police say one of the men tried to open the register but can't,

"They were asking for money numerous times," Wong said.

The video then shows the clerk running for her life, over the counter and out of the store, right behind one of the suspects.

The other crook was not far behind. After failing to find cash, police say both of the men ran away empty-handed.

"She's in pain, a lot of pain," Subway store owner Mandeep Singh said of his wife, who was the worker who was beaten.

Her recovery will take time, he said.

"They started to punch her, she fell down and broke her wrist," he said.

The crime has left workers at nearby businesses terrified. "We close at 8 o'clock. I don't want somebody to come here and just beat me up," one said.

The face of one of the suspects was clearly captured by the security camera.

Police ask that if you recognize them or have information, give them a call.
