Thanksgiving travelers surprised to find shorter lines at SFO

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KGO) -- If all your bags are packed and you're ready to go you're not alone. Wednesday is historically one of the busiest travel days of the year. But lifelong travelers are being caught off guard at the San Francisco International Airport.

"Well I was quite surprised as we came in because I was expecting big, long lines," said one traveler.

But the numbers don't lie. The day before Thanksgiving is not what it used to be.

"We think that because a lot of schools give kids the entire week off is the reason why we see the Friday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving as the peak days," said SFO spokesman Doug Yakel.

Of course, there's one place you can still feel the holiday crush. Parking around the airport is packed.

But Yakel says that too is letting up and credits technology like Lyft and Uber.

"Today's really the first time that our parking garages have reached capacity. Normally that happens days in advance of this Thanksgiving travel period," Yakel said.
