Fleeing burglary suspect in Fremont crashes, injuring other driver

FREMONT, Calif. -- A brief pursuit of a burglary suspect in Fremont this afternoon ended in a crash that injured another driver, a police spokeswoman said.

The pursuit started after an in-progress burglary was reported just before 1 p.m. at a home in the 400 block of Rancho Arroyo Parkway. The resident came home and found the burglar still inside, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

The resident followed the burglar out of the home and tailed him for a few blocks, sending police a description of the suspect's Toyota Prius and a photo of it.

A police sergeant then spotted the car a few miles away at Mission and Stevenson boulevards, not far from the police station. Two patrol officers tried to pull it over but the suspect fled, Bosques said.

He only made it about a mile before he crashed into another driver, a man in a Chevrolet sedan. The driver of that car was injured and taken to a hospital.

The suspect tried to continue fleeing, but lost control of the car, jumped the curb and stopped in some bushes. He tried to run from the crash into a townhouse complex but police quickly caught up with him and arrested him, Bosques said.

The suspect, a 21-year-old Oakland resident, was taken to a hospital briefly and then taken back to the Fremont Police Department to be interviewed.

The car he was driving turned out to be stolen during another burglary on Wednesday in the 36000 block of Soapberry Commons. Items stolen during that burglary were found in the car as well, Bosques said.

The suspect will likely face charges of burglary, auto theft, possession of stolen property, and other charges related to the pursuit, Bosques said. Investigators are still trying to determine if he was connected to any other burglaries.

The other driver who was injured in the crash initially was reported to have major injuries, but his condition seems to be improving and he was up and walking around later this afternoon, Bosques said.
