Next of kin notifications to begin for those killed in Ghost Ship fire

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- The City of Oakland says the Alameda County Sheriff's Office will be handling most of the next of kin identifications as investigation into the devastating fire that killed at least nine in Oakland.

Sgt. Kelly confirmed that next of kin notifications will begin Saturday evening for the nine people who were pulled from the wreckage at the scene. The intense process will be slow going, and that is causing frustration to the family members who have been at the Family Assistance Center since early Saturday morning.

Mayor Libby Schaaf was at the center meeting with family members privately.

"I think I'm just more infuriated that I'm not able to help," said Dan Vega, whose brother Alex is missing. "I want to be there, give me some gloves. I've got work shoes, I'm ready. Let me find my brother."

"She's not answering his phone, he's not answering his phone and no one can get in contact with them and it's not like her to not respond to a text," said Kim Gregory whose daughter is missing.

Many others have been lost in the fray, and their families are feeling the weight of the worst.
