OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- An effort is underway to connect the people displaced by the fire with those who want to help.

A former mortuary is now Trackers Earth, it's a place kids and adults come to learn outdoor skills. But inside, they're helping the people impacted by the Ghost Ship fire. They are collecting donations for the people who were displaced by the fire. Those people escaped with their lives, but with little else. One of those people works at Trackers Earth during the summer. The business decided to help collect donations and so far the community has responded in a big way.

"People need hubs in this kind of situation, they need somewhere to go and connect and have some kind direction. So we're just trying to provide a little bit of that direction," said Jess Liotta, Trackers Earth.

"Oakland gets such a bad rap but when something like this happens, whether it's here in Oakland or somewhere else, we're totally supportive so it's nice to see people supporting us," said Ari Huitzilopochtli, Oakland business owner.

They're looking for practical items that the people can use during the winter months. Warm clothes, backpacks, electronics, like phones and computers and gift cards for restaurants and retail stores like Target. This is on Adeline Street near Ashby Avenue. They're accepting donations through tomorrow evening.

If you are trying to locate a loved one, or need information call 510-382-3000.
