SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A mother and son are in the hospital after a freak accident on a Bay Area highway. It happened near a stretch of Interstate 680 in San Jose.

CHP says a 17-year-old was having car trouble and pulled over next to the center divider on the southbound side, right before Highway 101. He called his mom, who told him to turn on the hazard lights, put his seatbelt on and she was coming to help.

As she was arriving at the scene, she was involved in a crash with a pickup truck and her car rolled over, crashing into her son's car.

"Fortunately nobody was seriously hurt. Mother and son complain of pain at the scene but doesn't seem to be too major. The driver of the pickup truck was walking around the scene and he seems fine, probably sore tomorrow but he'll be OK," Sgt. Ben Grasmuck said.

The CHP is looking into what caused the crash.
