PETALUMA, Calif. (KGO) -- Petaluma plans to implement a quiet zone for SMART trains beginning on Wednesday.

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit line continues to test their trains and signals.

The Marin Independent Journal reports that SMART officials oppose Petaluma's plan to restrict when train operators can sound horns at railroad crossings.

Federal rules require engineers to sound horns at crossings unless other, safety measures are in place.

SMART plans to open to the public later this spring.
