19-year-old stabbing suspect shot, killed after charging at officer with knife in hand, Milpitas police say

MILPITAS, Calif. (KGO) -- Authorities are investigating after a 19-year-old man was shot and killed by police while officers responded to a stabbing in Milpitas Sunday afternoon, officials say.

Officers arrived to the 130 block of North Temple Drive around 1 p.m. and saw a man who was armed with a large kitchen knife outside the apartment.

Initial investigation reveals the officer tried to engage the man in conversation to de-escalate the situation, asking the man to drop the knife numerous times, an updated press release says.

Officials say although the man appeared to hear the officer, the 19-year-old did not comply but walked away instead. A second uniformed officer arrived where the man was walking towards, and the man changed directions again. Suddenly, the man ran quickly at the first officer yelling at the officer, "Kill me!" The second officer deployed a Taser, but it did not stop the man.

The first officer then fired his service weapon at the suspect, authorities say.

The man was immediately taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

Initial investigation reveals the 34-year-old victim of Sunday's stabbing is expected to survive and officials say he is the step father of the 19-year-old.

The Milpitas Police Department and the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office are investigating the incident and are not releasing the names of the individulas involved.
