Officer hospitalized, 3 in custody after altercation near SJSU

SJSU officer punched in altercation; 3 in custody
A San Jose State police sergeant was punched in the face multiple times after confronting three alleged gang members near campus.

SAN JOSE (KGO) -- A San Jose State police sergeant was punched in the face multiple times after confronting three alleged gang members near campus.

A SJSU spokesperson says the sergeant and another officer responded to a disturbance on South 3rd Street and Paseo De San Antonio between a group of students and gang members around 12:20 a.m.

SJSU says the sergeant was caught off guard and hit in the face multiple times. He was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.

Other officers arrived and were able to arrest 3 suspects. One was tased. One suspect faces a long list of charges, including assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, challenging to fight in public, and gang enhancements.

The other two suspects will be charged with resisting arrest, challenging to fight in public and violating a gang order.

The sergeant has worked for the university for 29 years and is described as a beloved member of the campus community. He will not work tonight but is expected back on the job soon.
