South Bay charity organizations pull out all the stops for Giving Tuesday

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving-the counterpoint to the shopping extravaganzas of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This year, some charitable organizations in the South Bay have found new ways to acknowledge the occasion.

Sacred Heart Community Service is calling the day "Give Props Day."

Staff members are asking people to donate money in the name of someone who is doing good work in the community.

Sacred Heart will email each honoree a personalized #GivingProps card. The agency will also feature stories on social media about people and groups devoted to service and social justice.

Urban Eco-Village of San Jose is taking Giving Tuesday in a whole new direction by giving away its services.

From 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. classes and lectures are free to everyone.

The day will start with meditation and end with a self-care workshop all in the eco-village's peaceful garden setting on Race Street.

Loaves & Fishes, in San Jose is the most traditional of the three. They hope to raise $30,000 on Tuesday to help feed hungry families.

But, a donation could be doubled, as Lydia and John Vidovich and Cisco Systems Inc. have pledged to match gifts up to $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Just a word of caution on Giving Tuesday from 7 On Your Side's, Michael Finney: He says donate to charities you know and trust not the ones that pop up in your email Tuesday.

Finney says the bad guys will be on the prowl.
