Off-duty Richmond cop taken into custody after firing gun at San Francisco hotel

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- An unidentified off-duty Richmond police officer was taken into custody early Sunday for repeatedly firing his gun inside San Francisco's Four Seasons hotel on Market Street.

"We received a call from a witness about 5am that a man was inside the hotel shooting a gun," said SFPD Spokesperson Robert Rueca.

Police sources confirm to ABC7 News that the off-duty officer fired eight rounds from the 12th or 14th floor which was under construction. With few places for responding officers to take cover it took more than 90 minutes to convince the man to surrender, which finally happened around 6:30 a.m.

"He surrendered peacefully. He's currently in custody. There are no reports of injuries," Rueca added.

The Four Seasons general manager says the man was a guest at the hotel.

Police recovered a handgun belonging to the off-duty officer. The man was taken to a San Francisco hospital to undergo a mental evaluation.

Richmond Police say the man is a veteran officer of the Force.

"We have since placed the officer on administrative leave we will conduct an investigation on the incident," said Richmond Police Lieutenant Felix Tan.

Several guests at the hotel are surprised they never received any warnings to shelter in place.

"I am a loyal customer at the Four Seasons, I'm surprised no one let us know what was happening," said Garrett Colucci from Newport Beach.
