Oakland police asking for public's help with recent homicides

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- It has been a violent 48 hours in Oakland. The Oakland Police Department is investigating four homicides between Sunday and Monday. They say two of them may be connected.

"I lost three brothers from the streets and so I'm just fed up," said Odette Young, the sister of one of the victims.

Young says someone shot and killed her brother, 36-year-old Mario Thomas of Oakland Monday afternoon as he was sitting in a chair behind a laundromat. The family created a memorial at the scene. Thomas had two children.

"They lost a good father too," said Thomas' brother.

The Oakland Police Department says they received a call around 4:10 p.m. Monday for a reported shooting on the 7100 block of International Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located Thomas suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.

Oakland Police say Monday afternoon's homicide may be connected to one from Sunday night just across the street.

There, someone left flowers and wrote RIP Esaw.

A woman who did not want to appear on camera told ABC7 News Esaw Davis was her brother-in-law.

"He was a good man a great man, he was quiet, stuck to himself, took care of his kids and everything," said the woman.

The Oakland Police Department says in that case they responded to the 1300 block of 72nd Avenue to investigate the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located two adults, one male and one female, suffering from gunshot wounds. The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The female was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The Oakland Police Department Homicide Division responded and took over the investigation. The deceased man was identified as a 38-year-old Oakland resident.

Oakland Police say there were two other homicides Sunday, one just before 1 a.m. on the 9500 block of E Street. Officers say they responded to investigate a report of a shot spotter alert. Upon arrival, they located two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds.

Emergency medical personnel arrived to provide aid. One of the males was pronounced dead at the scene, the other was transported to a local hospital in stable condition. The Oakland Police Department Homicide Division responded and took over the investigation.

The deceased man was identified as Polo Demetrio Pablocalmo, a 21-year-old Oakland resident.

The Oakland Police Department says there was another homicide at 2:20 a.m. Sunday on the 1100 block of International Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers located two adult males and one adult female suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the male adult victims, identified as Xin Hoang, a 31-year-old from Union City, was transported to a hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The other two adult victims were transported to a local hospital and remain in stable condition.

Police are describing all four homicides as disturbances where someone pulled a gun.

"This level of violence in unacceptable," said Acting Chief LeRonne Armstrong.

Just last week, the Oakland Police Department announced it had reduced shootings and murders by 52-percent since 2011 as a result of a 7-year ceasefire program.

"What we're trying to accomplish is actually getting ahead of violence and being able to stop it before it happens," said Captain Ersie Joyner.

OPD says they believe their strategy is still working.

"We don't need to be killing each other, we don't need to be fighting each other, we need to pull together and look out for each other," said Young.
