SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Police report the body of an infant was found at a waste facility in San Jose early Friday morning.

According to authorities, the baby's body was found on a conveyor belt at GreenWaste Recovery shortly after 3:30 a.m.

Officer Gina Tepoorten says it has been an emotional night for the employees that found the baby as well as the responding officers.

"This is just a sad story for everybody involved," Tepoorten said. "The employees were sorting out the recycles and that is when they located the deceased infant on a conveyer belt."

The coroner's office will conduct an autopsy to determine the manner and cause of death.

So far the investigation is still very preliminary. Tepoorten says they do not know the race or gender at this point and detectives have a lot of ground to cover as to where the baby came from.

"We do know that trash is brought from various cities throughout Santa Clara County," she said. "So again, they're going to conduct a very extensive investigation and determine in fact how this young infant showed up at their facility."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Ramon Sanchez or Detective Sergeant Isidro Bagon of the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit at 408-277-5283. Persons wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 408-947-7867.

The police department wants to remind parents young and old, that California has a Safe Surrender Law. The law allows parents to drop off a young infant within 72 hours of being born to any hospital or fire station, no questions asked.
