SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A San Francisco Fire Department paramedic is being honored on Thursday night for saving the life of a cat who nearly died in an apartment building fire.

SFFD paramedic Douglas Mei gave Otterpop oxygen after the cat was rescued from a burning building at 15th and Church streets on February 21.

On Thursday night, the city's Animal Control and Welfare Commission is recognizing Mei for his heroic deed by giving him a certificate of appreciation.

An online fundraising campaign has raised $18,000 to help the cat's owner cover the cost of veterinary care.
