SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- A Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy fired his service gun Wednesday at a suspect who drove a car toward him while trying to flee on a street in the foothills east of San Jose, a spokesman said.
The suspect drove away from the scene but deputies detained two suspects in a separate vehicle, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. James Jensen said.
At 11:25 a.m., deputies were dispatched on a report of drug-related activity in the 3600 block of Sweigert Road in an unincorporated county area outside San Jose, Jensen said.
When the two deputies got there, they spotted three suspects and two vehicles when suddenly one suspect drove one of the vehicles right at one of the deputies, he said.
The deputy drew his gun and fired into the vehicle. Sheriff's investigators do not know if the suspect was wounded, Jensen said.
The suspect, who did not crash into the deputy, then drove away and is still at large this afternoon. Neither of the deputies was hurt.
The deputies captured and detained the other two suspects, Jensen said.
Authorities said a person was being treated at a nearby hospital for gunshot wounds, but it was unclear if that person was connected to the incident.
A description of the suspect vehicle and other information about all three suspects was not immediately available, he said.
