Raiders release QB Matt Schaub
The Matt Schaub experiment in Oakland came to a predictable end Monday when the Raiders cut the former starting quarterback.
The Raiders acquired Schaub a year ago from Houston for a sixth-round pick. The Texans used the pick on running back Alfred Blue, who had 528 yards rushing.
Schaub contributed much less to the Raiders. Schaub threw 10 passes for Oakland and two were intercepted. He finished the season as the holder on kicks.
The Raiders acquired Schaub to start. However, after he struggled in the preseason, they went with rookie Derek Carr. The second-round pick was the only rookie quarterback to start every game in 2014.
The Raiders paid Schaub $8 million last season. His release saves them $5.5 million in salary-cap room. Oakland, which has signed an NFL-high nine unrestricted free agents from other rosters, has $25.1 million remaining.
Schaub's release had been expected all offseason. It became even more evident when Oakland signed Christian Ponder on Friday. The team still has Matt McGloin on the roster.
