SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KGO) -- The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in an "unincorporated" area of San Leandro Friday.

Around 11:30 a.m., deputies responded to the Valley Inn Hotel to assist Oakland police with the investigation of a homicide that happened earlier this year, deputies said in a press release.

"OPD's investigation led them to this location after they received information that a murder suspect connected to the case was inside a room at this hotel," officials said. "OPD also had intel that the suspect intended to have a 'shoot out with law enforcement' if attempts were made to take him into custody."

When Alameda County deputies arrived at the scene, the formed a perimeter around the hotel. Then, their Crisis Intervention Unit contacted the suspect by phone to negotiate a peaceful surrender, deputies said.

However, "the suspect was agitated, uncooperative and used furniture from inside the room make a barricade in front of his window. He also attempted to break through the wall to the adjoining room but quickly realized that deputies were on the other side," deputies said.

After five hours of communication between the suspect and negotiator, deputies say they resorted to tear gas. When he still didn't come out, they deployed another round tear gas.

Around 4:30 p.m. they saw him emerge from the hotel while reportedly raising a gun.

"Using a two-handed grip, he fired at least one round at our deputies," the press release said.

Deputies say they returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times.

"After the suspect was pulled away from the gun, an immediate action team attempted life saving measures; but he was pronounced deceased at the scene," deputies said.

Further details about the suspect are not available at this time. OPD has another suspect connected to the homicide in custody, and their investigation is still ongoing, officials said.
