San Francisco Giants right fielder Hunter Pence, who suffered a broken left forearm after getting hit by a pitch during spring training, is unlikely to hit his target return date of May 1, manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday.

Pence, who was estimated to miss six to eight weeks after suffering the injury March 6, is "making progress," Bochy said. However, he still needs to ramp up his baseball-related activities and hit off a tee and take soft-toss batting practice before he's ready to hit against live pitching.

"He's got to go through hitting off a tee, soft toss ... all the boxes he's got to check off," Bochy said.
